Gardens

The grounds surrounding Birtley House offer a serene and picturesque setting for both the Nursing Home and the Mews. Our eight acres of formal gardens feature easy-access pathways, allowing less mobile Residents to enjoy much of the landscape. We also have an ongoing programme to introduce additional paths, further enhancing accessibility.

Scattered throughout the gardens are many peaceful spots, ideal for resting, spending time with family, or simply sitting quietly to enjoy the wildlife and ever-changing blooms.

The garden itself is divided into a series of enchanting ‘rooms’, including the Secret Garden, the Rose Garden, the Apple Orchard, and the Long Walk. Each year, the flower beds along the Long Walk burst into vibrant colour, while the opposite side offers a tranquil pond with ducks, moorhens, and a gentle water feature.

Across the front lawn and parkland stands a remarkable 500 year old oak tree, along with a variety of other beautiful specimens such as cherry blossom and wisteria. Continuing through the grounds, you will reach the lake, framed by a graceful weeping willow and offering clear views toward the woodland.

Our award-winning Kitchen Garden also provides an abundance of home-grown produce, enjoyed by Residents throughout the year.

Food and Kitchen

High quality produce is essential to ensuring our Residents receive the nutrition they need. Our dedicated catering team uses fresh, seasonal ingredients, many of which come directly from our own kitchen garden, supplemented by a handful of trusted local suppliers to maintain consistent quality, flavour, and variety.

Each afternoon, whether or not Residents take part in activities, a beautifully prepared afternoon tea is served. A range of options is always available, and specialist dietary needs are thoughtfully accommodated.

We recognise that food plays an important role in daily wellbeing, and it should be both nourishing and enjoyable. Each day, a dedicated Menu Taker visits Residents to share the choices available for the following day. Residents are welcome to suggest alternatives should they wish.

The Menu Taker works closely with our kitchen team to understand each Resident’s preferences, note any special requests, and help ensure a truly personalised dining experience.

Naturally, all allergies and intolerances are carefully managed and catered for. Wherever possible, we also avoid waste, our Chefs create delicious jams and chutneys from surplus produce, ensuring that nothing goes unused.
