We’re pleased to share that Birtley House has been recognised in the prestigious 2025 Lottie Awards, earning a place as one of the Top 100 Care Homes in the UK, as well as being named among the Top 10 Best in Outdoor Space.

Lottie is one of the UK’s leading care home comparison sites, and the Lottie Awards recognise excellence in later life care, highlighting providers that go above and beyond in creating exceptional surroundings for residents.

Birtley House being acknowledged in two categories is a testament to our commitment to personalised care delivering a home-away-from-home for our residents.

A recognition award given to exceptional care homes across the UK, the award for ‘Top 100 Care Homes’ in the UK is judged by the Care Finder team at Lottie across 2,500 listed care homes, assessed against a range of metrics including;

  • Care quality
  • Workplace culture
  • Operational efficiency
  • Digital presence.

Why do we think we deserve this award?

As a privately-run care home established in 1932, the family today holds a wealth of knowledge, experience and understanding to positively enhance quality life for the residents.

Lotties views are also validated by other external references including:

  • Our 9.8-star carehome.co.uk review score
  • ‘Good’ CQC rating

We have also won a series of other awards – many of which provide recognition toward our occupational and workplace standards including:

  • Our NHS trust mindful employer status
  • Winning an innovation in workforce, recruitment and retention with Surrey Care Association
  • External recognition of our staff including the South East Regional Care Home Registered Manager award from the Great British Care Association

Birtley House has a strong digital presence and residents’ families, friends and loved ones, can keep up to date with all of the activities and exciting things happening. Sharing virtual newsletters, featured pieces on our residents, publishing monthly activity schedules and educational pieces provide our resident’s support networks with the validation they need that their loved ones are well-cared for and loved at Birtley House.

Overall, everyone at Birtley House is genuinely dedicated to improving the lived experiences of our residents throughout their time with us. From the Whalley family, who own and manage the daily running of Birtley House, to our compassionate nurses, attentive service providers, and the on-site support and maintenance teams who help make daily life comfortable.

Birtley House awarded ‘Best In Outdoor Space’

Lottie developed this award because of their research and published Lottie 2024 state of care report.

This paper drew multiple conclusions as to attitudes and behaviours when searching for care providers from over 217,000 data points.

One of the most notable points drawn from this and therefore the inspiration for this award was that 74% said that gardens and natural spaces are more highly valued than any other facility when looking for care.

Lottie states that “Our Best in Outdoor Space award recognises care homes with stunning, thoughtfully designed outdoor areas that residents can enjoy all year-round”  and that is one of the things that we are most proud to be home to at Birtley House – the stunning estate.

Why do we think we deserve this award?

Birtley House Nursing Home is fortunate to sit within 48-acres of the Surrey Hills landscape – a National Landscape.

Those who live and work at Birtley House benefit greatly from visiting and viewing our outside space as it changes with the seasons.

The Birtley estate gardens are alive with wildlife – it’s a place where nature feels close and everyday moments can be enjoyed by our residents.

Beyond the well-maintained scenery, the grounds are full of life in other ways too. They’re a host for celebrations, community gatherings and activities that bring everyone together. Residents regularly connect with local groups like the halow project charity for young people with learning difficulties and the on-site Forest School.

These connections help build a real sense of community and belonging, taking away any sense of an “institutional” environment. It’s this warm spirit that sets Birtley apart and makes daily life here so special.

The gardens also supply plenty of fresh produce that our in-house chefs turn into delicious, home-cooked meals. We take pride in avoiding the clichés of typical care home food, making sure every dish is nutritious, varied, and full of flavour.

What the Birtley Team have to say about these awards

‘We are thrilled to receive this prestigious accolade as one of the top 10 nursing homes for outstanding outdoor spaces. Our beautiful grounds are a true asset, and we extend our gratitude to our dedicated Gardening Team and the wonderful volunteers from the Halow Project. Their commitment, season after season, make it possible to Birtley to showcase such inspiring outdoor spaces worthy of such a national Lottie Award!’
