At Birtley House Nursing Home, we are lucky to witness many fascinating stories in the lives of our residents. And last week, we had the honour of celebrating a truly remarkable milestone as Margaret Arni, one of our residents, turned 100 years old. Adding to the magic of the occasion, Margaret celebrated surrounded by two school friends, both of whom are also centenarians.
Margaret’s journey is one of enduring friendship and a life lived with creativity and purpose. She won a school scholarship 90 years ago and has remained in touch with her school friends ever since. Margaret’s best friend, Joyce, who lives independently in Guildford, speaks with Margaret daily at 5 p.m., a tradition that has become a thing of joy and connection for them both. The pair were joined at Margaret’s birthday celebration by another school friend, Marjorie.
A Heartfelt Celebration
To mark this Margaret’s special day, our dedicated team at Birtley House planned a special tea party for Margaret, her friends, and her loved ones.
As Margaret shared with us: “I am so lucky to have kept such wonderful friendships throughout my life. Joyce and I have so many fond memories, from giggling in school assembly to working as land girls together during the war. We celebrate every birthday together and take turns to bring the cake, although now we only use one candle!”
A Happy Start on Markenfield Road
Margaret’s life began in a semi-detached Victorian house on Markenfield Road, Guildford. Her educational journey began at Sandfield School, where her hard work and talent earned her a scholarship to the school. Excelling in English and Art, Margaret’s creativity was evident even in her younger years, sparking a lifelong passion for artistic expression.
A Life Rooted in Guildford
Though Margaret briefly lived in Horsham, Guildford has remained a large part of Margaret’s life. Returning to her beloved hometown, she witnessed the town’s transformation over the decades. Reflecting on the changes, Margaret fondly recalls a time when Guildford was quieter, with fewer cars on the streets.
She has vivid memories of local landmarks, like the House of Fraser store and the Playhouse. She often visited a tea garden where live music played – a sharp contrast to modern developments like the Tunsgate Quarter.
A Life of Inspiration
Margaret’s life is truly inspiring. During World War II, she served in the Women’s Land Army, embracing the challenges and adventures of life on the land. Though they were difficult times, she retained her sense of humour, recalling stories such as the time her mother discovered a live mouse in her clothing after a long day in the fields.
After the war, Margaret became a Careers Advisor, a role that allowed her to guide and inspire others. Her passion for art has been a lifelong pursuit, and she became a gifted watercolourist and a life member of the Guildford Art Society. Her depictions of local scenes, including Guildford High Street and Newlands Corner, now adorn her room here at Birtley House.
The celebration at Birtley House
Margaret’s birthday was celebrated in true Birtley House style– a day filled with thoughtful touches, meaningful moments, and shared joy.
The day began with a beautiful communion service led by Reverend Beverly Watson, vicar of All Saints in Guildford. Hosted in the Activities Room, the service was attended by residents and friends, offering a peaceful and reflective start to the celebrations. Annie, one of our dedicated team members, thoughtfully arranged for cake, tea, and coffee to be enjoyed afterward, adding a sweet note to the occasion.
In the afternoon, the festivities continued with a delightful tea party in the Drawing Room and Orangery. Margaret’s friends, neighbours, and fellow residents gathered to enjoy cups of tea, a beautifully crafted cake by our Birtley House kitchen, and plenty of laughter. Our residents contributed to the day by creating a handmade card and decorations, transforming the area into a celebratory setting.
A Community of Care and Connection
At Birtley House, we are more than a care home; we are a community that cherishes the unique stories and achievements of our residents. Margaret’s milestone is a reminder of the importance of connection, creativity, and celebrating life’s special moments.
We are delighted to have been part of this incredible day and to have witnessed the friendship between three inspiring centenarian ladies. Margaret’s story inspires us all.
