A Vision for the Future of Care at Birtley House
In care, nothing stands still. Best practice evolves, regulations change, lives end, new people arrive, and the everyday experiences of residents, families, and staff continue to make Birtley what it is today.
For the past 21 years, it has been my privilege to work within this family business. I have had the opportunity to understand almost every part of life here, from daily operations to long-term planning. My approach has always been hands-on, following the example set by previous generations of my family. While much of my work takes place behind the scenes, my focus remains firmly on both the present realities and the possibilities that lie ahead.
I am proud of what has been achieved together, and especially of the partnership with Sylwia, our Registered Manager, over the past seven years. Her leadership, values, and commitment have been central to overcoming the challenges of recent years and, indeed, of creating this vision. The future of Birtley depends on strong, shared leadership, and hers is a vital part of that.
A long-term plan provides stability and confidence. With this in mind, I welcome the thoughts and perspectives of residents, families, and staff as we continue to evolve the future of care at Birtley together.
Last year marked 80 years since Birtley House moved to its present home and the same year my father, Simon, was born. His life, like mine, has been closely intertwined with this place. Birtley has always been more than a building, it is an ongoing story of family and community which are at the heart of this vision.

One Home, Many Lives
At Birtley House, we believe that one home can support many lives. Every person who comes here, whether resident, staff, or visitor, brings their own history, needs, and personality, and our hope is that everyone feels they belong and can live in a way that feels right for them.
Like any family household, Birtley has always been a place of supportive relationships and where comfort and enjoyment are found in the ordinary moments of the day. We aim to protect and strengthen this family culture, so that Birtley remains one home, shared by many lives, now and in the years ahead.
What Guides Us
In France, to stay en famille means more than staying in someone’s house. It means sharing everyday life through meals, conversation, routines, laughter, and quiet moments. It is about feeling known, included, and at ease.
This idea sits at the heart of Birtley, guided by three simple principles.
Choice
People thrive when they have choice. Not endless options, but enough flexibility to live life in ways that feel familiar and personal. This may mean eating when ready, joining in by choice, and being known well enough that preferences are understood.
Collaboration
We believe the best outcomes are achieved when residents, families, and staff work together in partnership. Working with people, not simply for them, allows everyone to contribute their own knowledge, experience, and support.
Belonging
Belonging is the comfort of knowing you are part of something, and that you are valued for who you are. It is often found in the small things. Being greeted by name, sharing a joke, and feeling included. These everyday moments create a sense of comfort and connection that turns a place into a home.
Together, these principles describe what it means to live en famille. They are not new to Birtley, but they give clear direction to how we continue to develop a Home where people feel safe, valued, and part of something shared.
The Place We Call Home
Since 1945, Birtley House has combined the warmth of a family-run home with the reassurance of professional nursing care. Set within a historic house and surrounded by gardens, it is a place that feels safe, peaceful, and connected.
What makes Birtley special is not only the setting, but the people who share it. Residents, families, and staff together create a warm and respectful community built on kindness, trust, and a positive approach everyday life.
We focus on people rather than systems. Good care comes not only from professional standards and clinical knowledge, but from the small daily choices, conversations, and routines that help each person feel valued and included. Families are welcomed as partners in the life of the Home, and residents are supported to live with both comfort and choice.
While Birtley is rooted in history, we continue to adapt and improve, paying attention to the details that matter most to those who live here.
Our Vision
We want Birtley House to be more than simply a care home. We hope our gardens and grounds, together with our expertise in elderly care, will become an essential resource for the wider community as well as for those who live here.
That means providing care not only for residents, but also for families, neighbours, and others who may be facing uncertainty about ageing, illness, or the changing needs of someone they love. At times like these, people often feel unsure or overwhelmed. We want Birtley to feel like a place where questions can be asked openly, practical help offered, and where people leave feeling more supported than when they arrived.
Looking ahead, we see opportunities to build on what we already do well. Some are small adjustments; others are new developments. Each one is a step towards strengthening choice, deepening collaboration, and nurturing a stronger sense of belonging.
Flexible Short Stays – Here When You Need Us
Short-term care is an increasingly important part of what we do. Families are under pressure, carers need rest, and hospital discharges can happen before confidence has fully returned. Many people need support without committing to a permanent move.
Our aim is to respond flexibly and safely when people need us most. High-quality short stays, whether for respite, recovery, or reassurance, can ease pressure on families and provide stability at uncertain times.
Short stays build trust, offer a sense of what life at Birtley is like, and often make future decisions easier.
Day Care Options – Open Doors
Day care once played an important role at Birtley, and we believe it can again. As isolation grows, offering companionship, activity, and respite during the day is both timely and needed.
Some elements are already familiar; others will be developed. Our aim is to create a welcoming daytime space where people can join activities, enjoy therapies, share a meal, or spend time in the gardens without staying overnight.
Opening our doors more widely benefits everyone. Visitors gain connection and reassurance, while residents and staff benefit from fresh energy and new interactions.
End-of-Life and Palliative Care
The final stage of life is one of the most important journeys we share. It calls for skill, sensitivity, and quiet presence. This care is well established at Birtley, and we continue to strengthen how we offer comfort and reassurance.
With support from our Chaplain and community resources, we provide care that recognises the whole person, including physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Birtley offers space for reflection, prayer, conversation, or silence. Families are welcomed and supported, so they feel informed and not alone.
We want each person to be treated with dignity, their wishes respected, and no one walks this final path without compassion and companionship.
Rehabilitation and Reablement
Many people leave hospital feeling uncertain and not yet ready to manage alone. Families are often left to bridge that gap without the support they need.
At Birtley, rehabilitation and reablement respond to this in a practical way. By combining skilled nursing care with therapies that rebuild strength and confidence, we support people to regain independence at their own pace.
This work is already part of what we do, with scope to develop further. Whether recovering from a fall, surgery, or illness, our aim is to provide steady support that reduces readmission risk, eases pressure on families, and builds confidence for the next stage of life.
Adapting for Enhanced Cognitive Support – The Bluebell Wing
As more people live with memory loss and cognitive change, the need for thoughtful, dignified support continues to grow. At Birtley, our response is to adapt the environment so people can remain part of daily life.
The Bluebell Wing reflects this approach. It will be a calm, welcoming space shaped by dementia-friendly design, with clear visual cues, safe outdoor access, and comfortable social areas that reduce anxiety and support confidence.
This builds on experience we already have, with scope to develop further. The aim is not to create something clinical, but to ensure residents feel secure, included, and connected to the wider life of the Home.
Care in Nature – A Home for All Seasons
Birtley’s grounds offer something for every season. The gardens and surrounding woodland bring fresh air, beauty, and a sense of continuity that supports daily life. Access to such space is rare in care settings. Our estate is a genuine strength, recognised in awards and valued by residents, families, and visitors. It changes how the Home feels, making it more open, calm, and connected.
We see the impact every day. Time outdoors can ease anxiety, lift mood, and prompt conversation. For some, it reconnects them with lifelong interests. For others, it simply offers peace.
Our aim is to build on this thoughtfully by improving access, adding sensory planting, and shaping spaces for both quiet reflection and shared activity. By making time outdoors part of everyday life, we strengthen what already sets Birtley apart and continue to improve quality of life in simple, meaningful ways.
Volunteering and Learning Opportunities
Alongside community engagement, we see real value in expanding volunteering and placement opportunities. Volunteers can bring conversation, music, reading, gardening support, shared hobbies, or simply time. When well supported and thoughtfully matched, these relationships add richness and variety to daily life.
We also hope to grow structured placement opportunities for students in nursing, care, therapy, and related fields. Real-world experience within a stable and values-led environment benefits learners and residents alike. Apprenticeships, observational visits, and supported work experience can contribute to the future workforce of care while reinforcing our own culture of reflection and improvement.
Community Connections
Birtley has always been part of a wider community. We aim to remain open and connected, not inward-looking.
Strong relationships with health and social care professionals are central to this. Clear communication and trusted collaboration support safer admissions, smoother discharges, and shared responsibility for good outcomes.
We also want to deepen connections with schools, colleges, and local groups. Shared activities, events, and intergenerational projects create natural opportunities for exchange, helping residents stay connected while building understanding of later life and care.
Much of this already happens at Birtley. Our aim is to strengthen and structure it, so community involvement becomes a consistent and valued part of daily life.
Our Promise
Birtley House continues to grow and adapt, but its principles remain the same. We will keep blending the best of our traditions with the changes needed for the future.
Families, residents, staff, volunteers, and partners all play a part. We work together, learn together, and share responsibility for the atmosphere of the Home. Through collaboration, we create a community where people feel supported, valued, and connected.
Whether through short stays, rehabilitation, enhanced cognitive support, community links, or time spent in nature, each aspect of Birtley is designed to help life feel safe, meaningful, and personal. That is why we aim to give people real choice in how they live each day, while creating a strong sense of belonging for everyone who spends time here.
One Home, Many Lives is our hope that every person who stays with us, whatever their circumstances, and for however long, feels they have truly lived with us, en famille.
