A Journey Back to Independence: A Couple’s Story of Connection, Confidence, Comfort, Reassurance and Care at Birtley House
Told in their own words, this is a heartfelt story of a couple’s journey through care — and of how the right support can help maintain connection, confidence, independence and a sense of togetherness.
For couples, the journey into care can bring many uncertainties, particularly when each partner has different care and medical needs that mean they live in separate accommodations.
In this heartfelt testimonial, a husband and wife reflect on their experience at Birtley House Nursing Home. They talk openly about the support they have received, the difference it has made to their lives and the joy of seeing her make such remarkable progress that she is now in a position to return home. Throughout their time at Birtley, they have felt embraced as a couple, rather than just one resident.
When she arrived at Birtley House, she was struggling with her health, had previously received hospice care and was using a wheelchair. Since then, her health has stabilised and her mobility has improved significantly. She is now able to walk through Birtley’s beautiful grounds to the fishing lake — a wonderful reflection of just how far she has come and a source of great pride for both her family and the Birtley House team.
For her husband, the experience has also meant being able to remain closely involved in her life. Living locally, he has been able to visit daily, join her for lunch, participate in activities and enjoy precious everyday moments together.
Their story is a wonderful example of how couples can continue to feel like a couple, even when their care needs are different and they are living separately. It also captures what makes Birtley House special: a welcoming, family-run environment where residents are treated as individuals and care feels personal, genuine and very much like home.
At Birtley House, we believe couples should be supported to maintain their relationships, routines and sense of togetherness wherever possible — creating the everyday moments that make a relationship special.
Filmed together and interviewed in the Annexe lounge by Resident Liaison Manager Sinead Whalley, this is a story of care, recovery, companionship and hope.
