An ‘Appletising’ Afternoon

With Birtley House having our very own Apple Orchard with around 700 trees, and the ability to harvest and make our own Apple Cider, it made sense to bring this concept into our activities afternoon for discussion about the harvesting, the process of development and the involvement that the Halow project have in both our kitchen garden and Apple Orchard to help make all of this happen.

With our nursing home residents we shared and tasted at least 4 different flavours of apple, and 3 apple cider flavours. The Birtley grown Russet apple came out top favourite. Added to the mix were apple crisps, apple crumb cereal bars and an apple cake which were all thoroughly enjoyed!

Not to do things by halves, we even found some apple themed songs to complement the afternoon, including ‘Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree’ and ‘In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree’.

Could an Apple flavoured Brandy be next on the horizon for Birtley House Guildford?
